Mission & Context
The Oregon Library Association (OLA) would like to display their 50th anniversary presentation at their annual conference and to members and other library association affiliates and users by posting it in an accessible format on their website. By transferring a milestone celebration (50th anniversary) in the Oregon Library Association’s history to modern formats, this project provides historical context and perspective to the work of the association and Oregon librarians. These items provide a snapshot of library association history as well as a way to assess the successes and changes that have occurred since the 50th anniversary presentation. Currently, they are boxed and only accessible by visiting the Oregon State Library (OSL) and asking to view them in the State Library’s special collections. By collating and adding this presentation in 21st century formats on the Oregon Library Association web page, this moment in history can be accessed and used by library association members and the larger library community.
Values
- Cultural Value: This project encompasses the slideshow (or presentation) for the 50th anniversary for the Oregon Library Association, and holds both memorial, and historical merit.
- Administrative Value: This project is requested by the OLA for the purposes of digitizing content for the educational use of the viewership of the OLA homepage. Digitizing the slideshow presents evidence of the organization's commitment to transparency and accountability.
- Collaborative Value: This project unites many different organizations (Emporia State University, Oregon Library Association, and the Oregon State Library) as well as potentially encourages communication between other libraries and sub-departments or roundtables within the collaborating organizations.
- Historical Value: Its value as an artifact stems from its historical context and its modern relevance.
Objectives
This project will create an access copy that collates the contents of the older formats in a video or slideshow format that is accessible to all web users. The best way to present this 50th anniversary presentation would be as an embeddable video with audio track, captioning, and an interactive transcript if possible. This video needs to be compatible with the Memberclicks website and meet the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) accessibility standards. Ideally these items will be: searchable in a web based interface, navigated in a web based format, scanned images will be at a resolution appropriate to the detail, and viewed as a cohesive online exhibit. An archival-quality DVD should be created for the purposes of continuing to preserve the context and content of the 50th anniversary slideshow.
